Drive a real icon from the Eastern Bloc

Since 2016, we have been offering unique Trabant driving experiences, sharing the charm and nostalgia of this iconic Eastern Bloc car with our guests. Now it is time to take the next step and bring this experience to an equally iconic location: the site of the Pan-European Picnic in Sopron. This historic setting is the perfect match for our concept, combining automotive nostalgia with a place that symbolizes freedom, history, and unforgettable stories.

A car, made of plastic

The Trabant is best known for its Duroplast body panels, a plastic-like material made from recycled cotton waste and resin. Instead of steel, it uses a lightweight, corrosion-resistant shell that became an unexpected symbol of East German ingenuity under material shortages.

A two-stroke identity

Its smoky, high-pitched two-stroke engine defines the driving experience. You mix oil with fuel, you accept the smell, and you embrace the noise. It is inefficient, loud, and completely unforgettable.

Simplicity over everything

Mechanically, the Trabant is brutally simple. A two-stroke engine, minimal electronics, and a design philosophy that prioritizes function over comfort make it easy to repair almost anywhere. It is less “engineered luxury” and more “if it breaks, fix it with a hammer and hope.”

An icon of a divided Europe

The Trabant became more than a car—it became a cultural symbol of everyday life in the Eastern Bloc. Today it represents nostalgia, transition, and freedom, especially in places like the Pan-European Picnic site where history literally changed direction.

Why drive a TRABANT?

Our fleet includes a rare 1989 Universal and a classic 1990 sedan—both fully original, completely unmodified, and preserved in authentic factory condition. No tuning, no alterations, just pure Trabant heritage as it left the production line.

Legendary 2-Stroke Engine

The original 594cc, 2-cylinder two-stroke engine delivers 26 horsepower of pure character. Loud, simple, smoky, and surprisingly fun, it creates a driving experience modern cars simply cannot replicate. No electronics, no filters, no artificial engine sounds. Just mechanical honesty and the unmistakable soundtrack of Eastern Europe on wheels. Tiny power figures, massive personality.

Column Shift Gearbox

The Trabant’s steering column-mounted gear lever is a rare piece of driving history. Instead of a modern floor shifter, you get a long, mechanical wand coming straight from the steering column, connecting you directly to the gearbox with zero filters and plenty of personality.

No Power Brakes, 4 Drum Brakes

The Trabant stops the old-fashioned way: pure leg power and mechanical honesty. There is no brake booster, so every slowdown is a direct conversation between your right foot and four drum brakes.

It requires a bit more anticipation than modern cars, but that’s part of the charm. You don’t “tap” the brakes here — you decide to stop.

Duroplast Body

Instead of steel, the Trabant’s body is made from Duroplast, a lightweight composite reinforced with recycled fibers. It doesn’t rust like traditional cars, which is already a small miracle in itself, but it does feel… different.
